Asclepius

Oil on canvas
12 x 16 inches

I was so enamoured by my previous painting that I decided to paint a similar one in the series.
Pain and suffering are part of life but so is healing. To every bad, there is a good.

Just for your interest, Asclepius is the God of medicine in ancient Greek mythology, just like Panacea( the previous one).

Panacea

Oil On canvas with palette knives
12 x 16 inches

A deflection from my usuals, this! But truth be told. I must admit that it was not a planned event . What led to this artwork was sheer laziness mixed with a vengeance to paint at the same time. But in my mind I was looking for a cure to rid me of certain difficulties I was facing. Of course I demanded it from my art. When all else fails, art is always there to give me a solution. I was thinking of playing with some colours, though geometry isn't really my domain. But it was an enjoyable experience which kept me going at it till 3 AM!

It is carnival time here in India, what with the Ganpati festival just over , only to give way to a host of others. It means festivities, get togethers, religious events, public events, friends, family and food! A labyrinth of colours is what you see in India at this time. But I have my own colours as each of us do. The world goes on. festivals come and go. Some things change some don't.

Profile Portrait

Oil on canvas with palette knives

Not my usual style, this. This painting is done for a new friend, who said "Please make me a painting to describe your version of me."  This is exactly how I envision my friend!A people person, love for cars and also an artist! Doesn't it sound like a facebook profile?:):). There are more personality traits packed in this painting of course but everything is not spelled out. Some things are discovered.

I love the word I created though- Profile Portrait. Seems apt and contemporary, on the lines of 'profile picture' in this social networking crazy era!

My Colours of Life

20 x 30 inch
Oil on Canvas
SOLD

My life has been a variegated medley of chapters. I have fought some, lost some and won some. In the pursuit of staying afloat in the currents of life, I've experienced all kinds of episodes and experiences. There have been so many colours in my life. I've absorbed them, maybe even to change my own colour!!! I now float in a myriad of  shades and hues and balance myself amidst work, music, motherhood, art and people!

These are the colours of my life. What are yours?

'Bihu brands'- Oil on canvas board

20X 30 cms

This is a brushwork I did about 2 months back, for a function to be held for the launch of an album on Bihu music.
Bihu is a festival of Assam (Indian state) which is held in the Spring season, and is also the Assamese new year. This festival heralds the beautiful greenery and people make merry and indulge in romance.

It is marked by the Bihu songs and the Bihu dance , which are performed by dancers, originally in the crop fields . The female dancers wear the traditional Assamese( Indian state)  two piece dress  Mekhela Sador in Muga silk. The bottom left most corner of the painting depicts one piece of the dress, in dull yellow silk with red ,yellow and green work done on the loom.

The leftmost corner of the painting depicts the 'Japi' , a traditional Assamese headgear, used for decoration.( not worn as a headgear though). It's made of bamboo and leaves of certain trees and is usually yellow in colour with bright red and green cloth. It is used as an accompaniment in the Bihu dance.

The rightmost corner of the painting depicts the Assamese orchids, 'Kopou Phool'  , or the foxtail orchid and it blooms in abundance during the season. It is used as a decoration in the bun of the Bihu dancer, while she is performing the dance.

At the bottommost right hand corner is the Gamocha or the Assamese towel. It is a versatile piece of cloth, used right from a gift of respect or greeting to a special or revered person,  to using it as a  towel for daily use. During Bihu festival, it is used as a gift for friends and family, to wish the new year.

I gifted this painting to the friend of mine who is releasing the album.

Here's a video of a bihu dance, where the dancers are performing Bihu dance in traditional dress to a bihu song.  :

Lucky lips?- Oil on Canvas

A4 size

A brush work after ages! Part of my couple series.

Companionship - Oil on canvas

A4 size

Who is a companion? One who loves you, who understands you and lets you be.
But at times love is unrequited. It is painful. Still, at the end of the day we all want to be loved and we all seek companionship.

Here is Rihanna with 'We found love':

Connecting the dots- Acrylic on Canvas- 50 x 80 cms

Trees are as much required as connectors as the girl child. Both play a synergistic role in the sum of the parts , which is more than the whole!

This Ganpati festival ( Indian religious festival ) , I have made my contribution to goodness ( Godliness?)  by hopefully spreading this thought through my painting as it hangs in the marquee.

Who will cry when we die! (Prize Winner)

Acrylic on A4 canvas -Sketch
A sketch submitted as an entry in a competition for World Environment Day Celebrations.( it won a prize).

Just got to know from an artist who viewed this work that this may be called an anthropomorphic tree.

Anthropomorphism is a term coined in the mid 1700s, to refer to any attribution of human characteristics (or characteristics assumed to belong only to humans) to non-human animals or non-living things, phenomena, material states and objects or abstract concepts, such as god(s). Examples include animals and plants and forces of nature such as winds, rain or the sun depicted as creatures with human motivations, and/or the abilities to reason and converse. The term derives from the combination of the Greek ἄνθρωπος (ánthrōpos), "human" and μορφή (morphē), "shape" or "form". Characters from the story of Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story are great examples of anthropomorphism.

As a literary device, anthropomorphism is strongly associated with art and storytelling where it has ancient roots. Most cultures possess a long-standing fable tradition with anthropomorphised animals as characters that can stand as commonly recognised types of human behavior. In contrast to this, such religious doctrines as the Christian Great Chain of Being propound the opposite, anthropocentric belief that animals, plants and non-living things, unlike humans, lack spiritual and mental attributes, immortal souls, and anything other than relatively limited awareness

Flag Bearer - OIl on Stretched Canvas - 15 x 24 inches

Show us the path to follow and arrive there!

The concept has been woven here with a backdrop of warm/cool colours. It was challenging to keep the theme and mesh colours with it.

This kind of work is not my usual style. I toiled over this painting, changing, repainting and redoing it till wee hours of morning.

This painting has story to tell. Lessons to teach .

Guns and Roses- Oil on Canvas Board, 35 x 45 cms

Indian Marriage- A rosy picture for some women , filled with peace and sunshine...but a life of bleeding agony and chains for others.
This being a" thinking" painting, took a lot of time and toil. It had to be planned, to be able to divide the expressions into sad and happy. Well, this is what I have at the end of it.

Love Dart- 35 x 40 cms oil on Board

Whatever be the environment in which love exists, the lovers always aim at bullseye!Flames of love surpass everything. Was good to get back to the familiar oils.I kept it loose and unplanned and let the brush guide me. It was fun doing this as this is something which is straight from the heart and unlike anything structured that i always do.Maybe I can call it contemporary. of course it looks better than the photo!

Responsibility-Oil on Board, 30 x 40 cms

Growth but not at the cost of nature...Man needs to think responsibly and strike an equal balance. My photos are clicked on the cell phone due to lack of time as it is too much work to take out the camera , just for one painting...but from the next post I'll try to use the camera, so the picture quality is better.

Shades of love- " Happy Valentine's Day"- Watercolour.

Love is a strange emotion. It has various shades. It can be innocent pink , blooming red, but often also accompanied by shades of blue, tinged with the green of envy..and sometimes love also turns dark, murky and bleeding. But still we crave for love!
Happy valentine's day folks!
